Deception Island, Whalers Bay

This area of Deception Island in the Shetland Islands have been occupied since 1920, when a Norwegian whaling company opened a whaling station here. The station was abandoned in 1931, and in 1944, the abandoned buildings were occupied by a British scientific research station. Deception Island is the caldera of an active volcano – and after two eruptions in the late 1960s, the station was abandoned. Much of the abandoned buildings – like this one – remain.
