Strike Valley, Capital Reef National Park

This is an image taken from the top of the Burr Trail, a road that winds through Long Canyon just outside of Boulder, Utah in what is now Escalante National Monument. When it meets the border of Capital Reef National Park, it becomes a dirt road an ultimately descends by harrowing switchbacks to Switch Valley where it joins up with the Notom Bullfrog Road. Rain had turned the latter to slick impassable mud so after making our way down the switchbacks, we turned around and went back up – where we were able to camp with this incredible view of the Waterpocket Fold, the snow covered Henry Mountains and Strike Valley.
